A large appeal to Sanibel Island real estate are our great bodies of water. Situated right in between the San Carlos Bay and the Gulf of Mexico, Sanibel and Captiva Islands have breezes that roll off the water to cool temperatures, an active aquatic wildlife population, sunrises and sunsets over a sparkling horizon, and plenty of recreational water activities. You can find Floridians and visitors boating, fishing, kiteboarding, waterskiing, paddleboarding, or simply floating in the gulf or bay.
Of course, water is vital and necessary to our lives. Beyond that, it has other accompanying health benefits––it’s calming and relieves stress. Water has sustaining and restorative qualities connected to us all. For all these reasons and more, many people are raising awareness about how to protect and preserve our waters.
The second annual Float for Life occurred yesterday. The event took place in the water off Fort Myers Beach to promote stewardship for the Earth’s oceans and provide an opportunity for people to experience the relaxing effects of connecting with the water. Participants teamed up in groups of three and alternated supporting one another as they free-floated.
Respected water conservationist, Alexandra Cousteau, spoke at the event, “Float for Life gives people an opportunity to reconnect with the ocean and be reminded that we all have an important role to play in ocean conservation. After all, people protect what they love.”
Proceeds for the event went to the Sanibel Sea School, another organization that cares deeply for our oceans. The Sanibel Sea School provides hands-on, marine-based educational and learning opportunities for children and adults through classes, programs, and more.
They aren’t the only ones. There are plenty of other local organizations that are working to protect the natural life and beauty of our area, including Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation and the Ding Darling Society at the J.N. Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge.
